AHEC's in Indiana...
Metropolitan
Indianapolis/Central Indiana Area Health Education Center (MICI-AHEC)
Metropolitan Indianapolis Central Indiana Area Health Education Center (MICI-AHEC)
is a unique and exciting collaboration between St. Vincent Health and
the Indiana Area Health Education Centers Program Office.
There are
over 200 AHECs in 46 states. An AHEC is a network of regional "centers"
that are coordinated through a central "program" office. Each regional
center is locally grown and is designed to assess and meet the needs of
citizens in that specific region. AHECs perform four basic functions:
-
Assist in the
ambulatory training of health professionals. Health professionals who train in underserved
communities are much more likely to serve those populations when
their training is completed.
-
Provide continuing
education, especially for providers to the underserved.
Continuing education programs improve the quality of care and
enhance professional satisfaction, both of which contribute to
provider retention.
-
Recruit minority
and economically/educationally disadvantaged students into the
health professions careers. Minority health professionals are substantially more
likely to serve vulnerable populations then their majority
counterparts. Likewise, those who grow up in rural and underserved
areas are more likely to go to a similar environment to practice
after completion of their training.
-
Respond to emerging
health issues
by distributing information necessary for practitioners and
facilities to address critical health issues and threats in a timely
way.
The
MICI-AHEC will collaborate with the community to:
-
Work with area
schools to recruit children into health careers and provide health
information.
-
Offer continuing
education for health care providers.
-
Provide access to
courses to enhance the preparation of health care providers and
assist in meeting the educational needs of area citizens.
-
Support activities
which promote access to quality health, dental and mental health
care.
-
Provide continuing
education for healthcare providers to assure culturally sensitive
care.
